That Gets You Ready for the Road

There’s no substitute for hands-on experience—especially when you're learning to drive a commercial vehicle.

At Alamo Truck Driver Training, we give our students real practice in real trucks, led by instructors who are committed to your success.

Our behind-the-wheel (BTW) CDL training is designed to help you build confidence, master the fundamentals, and prepare you to pass your CDL road test—all in a safe, supportive environment.

What Is Behind-the-Wheel
CDL Training?

Behind-the-wheel (BTW) training is the hands-on portion of your CDL program where you learn how to operate a commercial vehicle under the guidance of a trained instructor. It’s required by federal ELDT standards for all new drivers pursuing a Class A or Class B CDL.

At Alamo, we provide one-on-one behind-the-wheel instruction on a closed course, so you can focus on learning the skills that matter—without the pressure of traffic or outside distractions.

What You'll Learn
Behind the Wheel

During your BTW training, you'll work directly with an experienced instructor who will walk you through every skill required to pass your CDL skills exam and operate safely on the road.

You’ll gain confidence through real practice in areas such as:

  • Pre-trip inspections
  • Air brake system checks
  • Straight-line and offset backing
  • Turning and lane positioning
  • Shifting and gear control
  • Lane changes and merging
  • And more

You’ll complete this training in the same trucks you’ll use during your test, so you can focus on improving—not adjusting to new equipment.
